Arthritis Knee Brace Treatment
By applying dynamic pressure, an unloader brace offloads the knee joint only when needed, not constantly. Some knee braces apply pressure the moment it is donned, this will lead to a tired knee that is more susceptible to injury. Treatment with the correct knee brace can relieve these symptoms:
- Pain, after overuse or after long periods of inactivity
- Aching and soreness of the joints
- Stiffness after periods of rest, swelling of the joints
Our certified orthotists can fit you with the knee brace recommended by your doctor for your diagnosis. Our practitioners also educate you about getting the maximum benefit from your brace. Our goal is to help you get back to your daily activities with less pain.
How does an OA brace relieve my knee pain?
Dynamic OA braces can relieve bone-on-bone joint pain by opening the joint only when the leg is extended, when the most pain relief is needed. With dynamic unloading, no pressure is applied when the leg is bent which makes these braces more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. A custom-fitted unloader knee brace has a range of settings to dial in to make the brace as comfortable as possible. Your practitioner should be able to show you how to use the different settings, and can add shims or make other adjustments for the most comfortable fit.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the knees. The cartilage in the knee joint gradually wears away so the protective space between the bones decreases. As your pain increases and your mobility decreases, a lack of activity can make your joints hurt more. There are many knee arthritis treatments out there, and the sooner you address any issues with your doctor, the sooner you can get pain relief and possibly reduce further progression of the arthritis.
Anatomy, age, activity level, and insurance coverage should all play a role in choosing the correct brace. There are several manufacturers of OA knee braces and hundreds of choices and each knee brace does something a little different. If your current brace is uncomfortable or pinching, your practitioner should be able to make adjustments for a better fit.

Single-Upright Pull Technology
Clinically proven to provide pain relief. A single-upright OA brace that provides the greatest amount of OA correction on the market. The unique design of the hinge allows for 36° of brace angulation. This allows the brace to unload knee joints that have excessive tissue. It can be made to unload the medial or lateral compartment of the knee.
- Unloads using four-point load system
- Ideal for severe osteoarthritis
- Up to 36° of correction
- Recommended for patients with redundant soft tissue
- A dial allows incremental adjustments
- Custom or semi-custom designs
- Moderate to severe unicompartmental OA
- This design addresses OA conditions only, not associated with ligamentous instability
- Recommended for moderate activities such as walking, hiking, golf, tennis
- Not recommended for high-intensity sports such as football, basketball, skiing, etc.
- Ideal for large patients needing maximum correction
Legacy Thruster: For Moderate to Severe Applications
The Legacy Thruster’s hinge is on the affected side of the knee. This unique design creates relief by pulling the straps to open the joint space vs. pushing against the opposite side of the knee.
- A dial allows for incremental force adjustments
- Up to 22° of correction can be applied
- Unloads in a four-point load system
- This design addresses OA conditions only, not associated with ligamentous instability
- Recommended for moderate activities such as walking, hiking, golf, tennis
- Not recommended for high-intensity sports such as football, basketball, skiing, etc.
Dual-Upright Dynamic Unloader
Moderate to Severe Applications
The DUO (Dynamic Unloading Osteoarthritis) brace is the only dual-upright dynamic OA brace on the market. The brace provides a load across the knee to open the joint and as the knee goes into flexion, the load turns off. The reduction of pressure when sitting eliminates the skin irritation associated with a constant pressure brace. This makes the DUO ideal for patients that wear the brace all day for activities of daily living. The DUO is ideal for a patient with an active lifestyle who may need additional support from a dual-upright brace due to ligament instability.
This design addresses OA conditions as well as instability conditions:
- Low profile frame
- Dynamic loading hinge
- Incremental arm adjustments
- Up to 16º of correction can be applied
- Unique strapping minimizes migration
- For patients requiring a brace for all day use
- Suitable for patients with redundant tissue
- Suitable for low to moderate to high activity levels
- Mild to Moderate to high medial or lateral uni-compartmental OA while providing support of the ACL, PCL, MCL, or LCL and menisci
Recommended for moderate to high activities such as walking, hiking, golf, tennis, snow skiing and basketball
Double Up Right Push
Provides OA pain relief while stabilizing the knee and protecting the ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL. The only difference in the two braces is the size of the brace
These orthoses provide OA pain relief while stabilizing the knee and protecting the ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL. The Axiom is available in a choice of magnesium for comfort or aluminum for high impact.
Z-12 OA: Moderate Applications
- OTS version has 3° of correction built into the frame can increase off-load adding condyl pads
- Custom has up to 8° of correction capability

This product is ideal for elderly OA patients and can accommodate a shorter leg length.
Axiom Adjustable: For Moderate Applications
- Similar to the Z-12, the dual-upright Axiom OA features an adjustable condyle building up to 12° of correction into the brace
- The Axiom frame is slightly longer than the Z-12 and can be made out of aluminum for severe cases.
- Post-surgical meniscus injuries.
OA Impulse Push: For Mild Applications
The soft OA Impulse is ideal for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) and an active lifestyle. The Impulse is designed to give the patient the ability to adjust the amount of OA relief by adjusting the load of the hinge, as well as to provide support and compression through Bledsoe’s revolutionary TriTech material. The combination of the TriTech material and the loadable hinge design offers fashion and function in a single OA brace.
Push Technology: The push on the non-affected side of the knee opens up the opposite side of the knee. It does this by increasing the amount of force applied at the condyle.
